Discover the powerful benefits of Tower and Chair Pilates and how they can transform your strength, control and flexibility
Tower and Chair Pilates are two powerful variations of classic Pilates that go beyond mat work.
Each one uses unique equipment to build strength, improve posture and enhance control. At Sabai Studio, you can join Tower-only sessions or explore the best of both with our Fusion classes, which combine Tower and Chair Pilates for a full-body, resistance-based workout.
In this blog, we will introduce you to both Tower and Chair Pilates, highlight their key benefits, and explain why they are so effective for people at all stages of their fitness journey.
What is Tower Pilates? 🧘♀️
Tower Pilates involves a stable mat combined with a vertical frame. This frame is fitted with springs, bars and loops that support and challenge your movements. Based on the original Cadillac equipment designed by Joseph Pilates, it encourages controlled movement while engaging deep muscles throughout the body.
Unlike Reformer Pilates, which uses a moving carriage, the Tower remains fixed in place. This gives you more stability, while the springs add resistance to improve strength, flexibility and balance.
What is Chair Pilates? 🪑
Chair Pilates uses a compact, upright piece of equipment called the Wunda Chair. It features a cushioned seat with a pedal that is connected to adjustable springs. This pedal can be pressed with the hands or feet, creating resistance and support for a wide range of exercises.
Although it might look small, the Chair offers a dynamic workout. It strengthens the upper body, core and legs while also improving balance and alignment. The design allows for both seated and standing work, which is especially beneficial for building control and stability in everyday movement.
Why are these styles so effective? 💪
The combination of resistance and stability in both Tower and Chair Pilates makes them incredibly effective. Springs challenge your body to stay engaged through every part of a movement, which builds strength and improves coordination.
Because the equipment supports proper alignment, you are more likely to perform exercises with correct form. This reduces the risk of injury and helps you move more mindfully.
Are these classes suitable for beginners? 🤝
Yes, both Tower and Chair Pilates are beginner-friendly. At Sabai Studio, small class sizes mean you receive personal attention and support throughout each session. The resistance can be adjusted to match your level, so you can start gently and progress at your own pace.
If you are new to Pilates, you may prefer starting with a Tower-only class for a grounded introduction. If you are ready for a slightly more dynamic session, the Fusion class is a great option.
What is a Fusion Pilates class? 🔁
Fusion classes at Sabai blend Tower and Chair Pilates into one seamless experience. These sessions are designed to give you the best of both worlds: the supportive, guided movement of the Tower and the strength-building control of the Chair.
This combination allows for a more diverse and rounded workout. You will move through a mix of lying, seated and standing positions, targeting your whole body while improving flexibility, posture and balance.
