How to choose between tower or reformer pilates for your needs, goals and preferences
If you are new to pilates or are looking to switch things up, you might be wondering what the difference is between tower pilates and reformer pilates.
At Sabai Studio in Altrincham, we offer both options as part of our small group pilates classes, helping you build strength, control and mobility in a calm, supportive environment.
Here's a breakdown of each method and how to decide which is best for you.

What is tower pilates? 🤔
Tower pilates uses a wall-mounted frame with springs, bars and straps to provide resistance. Movements often take place on a mat, using the tower to assist or challenge the body in different ways.
It is ideal for improving posture, flexibility and core engagement, and is especially helpful for beginners or those recovering from injury.
What is reformer pilates? 🛠️
Reformer pilates uses a sliding carriage machine with adjustable springs, pulleys and a footbar to create resistance and challenge. It is dynamic and versatile, allowing for a wide range of full-body movements while lying, kneeling, sitting or standing.
Reformer sessions are great for building strength, improving balance and refining form, making it a popular choice for those seeking a deeper workout or more variety.
How to choose the right class for you ⚖️
If you are new to either method, we suggest starting with whichever class best suits your current level and goals.
For example, tower pilates is perfect for those wanting to focus on control, stability and form, while reformer pilates adds more movement and resistance, making it slightly more challenging. Both styles are low-impact and can be modified for all abilities.
We keep our class sizes small so that instructors can provide personalised guidance in both formats. You’ll be supported from start to finish, no matter if you choose tower or reformer pilates.
Can you mix both into your routine? 🔁
Absolutely. Many of our clients enjoy alternating between tower and reformer pilates to experience the benefits of both.
This helps to avoid plateau, keeps your sessions fresh and allows different areas of the body to be targeted. Our instructors will always be happy to help you plan a routine that suits your needs.
