Everything you need to know before trying Reformer Pilates at our Altrincham studio

The crazy equipment and unusual moves can sometimes put people off trying a Reformer Pilates class, but we want the process to feel exciting for first-timers, not daunting.

At Sabai Studio in Altrincham, our Reformer Pilates classes are designed to feel welcoming, supportive and easy to settle into, no matter your experience level.

This guide will help you feel prepared, relaxed and confident before your first class, so you can focus on enjoying the movement rather than worrying about the details.

What to bring with you 💧

You don't need much to get started with Reformer Pilates.

We'd recommend bringing a bottle of water to stay hydrated throughout your practice, and you'll also need grip socks to help you feel stable on the reformer. If you do not already have grip socks, they are available to purchase at the studio.

Wear workout clothes that you feel comfortable moving in. There is no need for anything fancy or fitted, just clothing that allows you to move freely and feel at ease.

Understanding the Reformer machine 🧠

The reformer may look complex at first, but you will be guided through everything by our friendly instructors. The machine uses a moving carriage, springs and straps to create resistance and support throughout each exercise.

Your instructor will explain how the springs work, adjust them for you and guide you through each movement. You are never expected to know how to set anything up on your own, especially in your first class.

What a Reformer Pilates class feels like ✨

Reformer Pilates classes at Sabai are flow-based and controlled, focusing on strength, stability and mindful movement. You will move through a sequence of exercises that challenge your muscles while still feeling supported by the equipment.

The pace allows time to understand each movement, with clear instructions and options offered throughout. You are encouraged to move at your own pace and take breaks whenever you need them.

What to expect after your first class 🌿

After your first Reformer Pilates class, it is normal to feel muscles you may not usually use. You might notice some mild soreness in the days that follow, but this often eases as your body becomes more familiar with the movements.

Over time, many people find Reformer Pilates helps them feel stronger, more mobile and more connected to their bodies. Consistency is encouraged gently, without pressure or comparison.

Small classes and supportive instruction 🤍

Sabai’s small class sizes mean instructors can offer personal guidance and reassurance throughout your session.

This helps first-timers feel comfortable asking questions and taking their time to understand the movements.

There is no pressure to keep up with anyone else. The focus is always on what feels right for your body on the day.
